OK, so we've covered PCs, laptops, and Macs. What are these server computers that the office IT guy talks about?
As you probably know, a bunch of computers wired together form a network. Servers are powerful computers that "serve out" data, services, and software to the computers on the network. For instance: in the classroom, here at MCT, all of the PCs internet connections are handled by one server machine.

Servers sound useful! What else should I know?:
Physically, there are many different kinds of servers . Some are regular PCs that have special server software installed onto them. Others are giant supercomputers covered with blinking lights.
Some servers run a version of Windows and would feel familiar. Other servers run strange software that requires much special training.
Dedicated servers, like the ones inside large offices, are horrendously expensive machines that cost tens of thousands of Euro.
You now know enough to kid around with your friendly (network) neighborhood IT man, but leave any server repair or configuration work to a professional. This short course will not cover servers.
