The Elvis Sightings, by Peter Eicher

The Elvis Sightings A bit of fun! Uh huh huh..mp3 (4.4 MB)
by Peter Eicher
Avon Books, 1993

Elvis is Everywhere!

Let me highlight another long-time resident of my bookshelf, in honor of the thirtieth anniversary of the day Elvis Presley faked his death.

That's right, baby. Faked his death. The proof is all there in Peter Eicher's 1993 collection of essays and encounters. The Elvis Sightings relates incidents, both short and long, where everyday people have seen The King, spoken with him, and even heard that unmistakable voice uplifted in song- all after the 16th of August, 1977. There's even 8 pages of photographic proof for those who aren't convinced by the true believers that Eicher has identified and interviewed.

Granted, those snaps were sourced from The Weekly World News. You still can't deny that:

  • Elvis, living and performing in mob-ruled Vegas, met with Richard Nixon in 1970 and was made a "Federal Agent-at-Large." Was Elvis an undercover agent in the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs, a uniquely-positioned source of inside information? Anyone who ratted on the mafia to the FBI would have to disappear.
  • Presley had hundreds of intimate contacts in the movie industry- professionals whose full-time job was the art of staging convinving shows and spectacles. A funeral was well within their capability.
  • As late as 1991, a computer hacker hacking up bits of a credit report on Elvis's Social Security number found financial activity all over the South and Midwest. This credit report was time and again cross-linked with the name John Burrows- an alias that Elvis frequently used before his death!
  • Eyewitness accounts are divided into several chapters of brief sightings and a number of longer adventures. These longer stories read like episodes of Touched By An Angel. The Angel is played not by Northern Irish hottie, Roma Downey, but by ELVIS.

  • Scott, climbing to the top of an isolted mountain along the Appalachian Trail, is a man seeking answers. There he encounters a stranger named "John Burrows" who shared sage words about God, freedom, and.... doughnuts. It's ELVIS!
  • A reckless young adventure-seeker named Wade, tearing along the Tennessee backroads in his pickup truck, blows a tire out. He crashes down a hill into a world of pain. His life is saved by a samaritan who calls himself "John." After being dragged out of the wildrerness, checked into hospital, and given $1000.00, Wade recognized his mysterious savior- ELVIS!
  • Dog, a stoner dropout who just don't believe in nothing no more, encounters a mysterious stranger- a stranger whose power and wisdom inspire him to run through the St. Louis Arch, break free of his delinquency and become a fine upstanding young man. ELVIS! ELVIS LIVES!
  • I take The Elvis Sightings down from my bookshelf every time this bad old world has left me needing a little reassurance and convincing. I just can't help believin', baby.

Critical Mick says: The popular films, songs and books that have arisen from Elvis' death, ridiculous as some of them are, are all a fun compliment to the fusion, artistry and influence that are Presley's true legacy. You ain't nothin' but a hounddog if you don't get a kick outta The Elvis Sightings.

Bubba Ho-Tep: it was an Elvis impersonator who died in 1977. The REAL Elvis is stuck in a run-down East Texas nursing home, which is being stalked by a mummy.Confederate Nation: Special Appearance by Elvis Presley is the feel-good tale of a roadtrip through an alternative history where the South won its independence and Elvis never died. It's one of the best books Critical Mick read in 2006. El Vez is the Mexican Elvis. The fusion and passion of the King live on!

    Rock a hula, Peter Eicher!
